Ghajini starring Amir Khan landed in trouble for copyright violation:
The release of the much- hyped Ghajini starring Aamir Khan on Thursday ran into trouble over alleged copyright violation with Madras High Court staying its screening and a separate petition seeking similar action was moved in Bombay High Court.
Madras HC:
A civil suit was filed by A Chandrasekharan claiming to be a copyright holder for remaking and dubbing of the Tamil film Ghajini released in 2005.
Justice P R Shivakumar of the Chennai High Court granted an interim injunction on the release of the film. Chandrasekharan claimed he had only parted with the Chennai city rights, Telugu remake and dubbing rights and satellite rights and retained all other rights of Ghajini.
Mumbai HC:
KBC Pictures a little-known production banner filed a case in the Bombay High court on Monday, claiming that producer Madhu Mantena had infringed upon its copyright as it had acquired the right to re-make “Ghajini” in Hindi.
Asking for the court’s stay on the movie’s scheduled release Dec 25, the counsel for KBC told the court that his client’s re-make version of the movie was already on the floors under the title “Kahani Ghajini Ki”.
Producer Iqbal claims KBC Pictures made a film called “Kahani Ghajini Ki” at a cost of Rs.100 million, and with the same storyline as “Ghajini”.
The Bombay High Court has allowed “Ghajini” to be released on Dec 25 (Thursday) even though the case filed against its producer for alleged violation of copyright is still pending in the court.
